Co-Owner / Head Coach

[He/Him]

As a “Globo gym” regular and an avid distance sport athlete, I thought becoming a personal trainer was going to be my avenue after graduating from the University of Guelph. As a student, I was invited to try a CrossFit class with a friend and after that first CrossFit workout in 2011 I immediately became addicted. After years of focusing on different strength and conditioning methods alongside endurance training, I found the greatest results and experience with the CrossFit training methodology. I began apprenticing as a CrossFit trainer and completed his CrossFit Level 1 course in 2012 so I could begin coaching others and sharing my passion for CrossFit. I am focused on growing the community within his gym and encouraging others to achieve their own personal best through my coaching.

  • CrossFit Level 2 Trainer
  • CrossFit Kids
  • NCCP Olympic Weightlifting – In Training
  • First Aid/CPR Certified

What Dan Loves About Coaching:

Coaching CrossFit is like nothing else and you can’t help but have a good time and a positive experience every moment your are in the box. The greatest satisfaction is in working closely with a member and seeing immediate improvements in their movement or teaching them a new technique or skill.

Favourite CrossFit WOD:  Linda

Least Favourite CrossFit WOD:  Fran

Favourite Treats:

I love treats, and have far too many each week. I love the regulars like Pizza and Desserts, but where I really can’t help myself is candy, my sweet tooth makes up about every tooth in my mouth. Banana marshmallows, anyone?

[She/Her]

I began my CrossFit journey in 2010 at Driven – Huronia CrossFit in Midland, Ontario. I had been active in sports throughout high school but found it difficult as an adult to find something that would fill that competitive void. Needless to say, I quickly became obsessed! After graduating in 2010, I worked as a full time Kinesiologist in Midland expanding my anatomy and biomechanics knowledge. I went back to school in 2011 for engineering, during which I competed on the CrossFit Guelph team at the Canada East regionals. I have been training hard for the masters competition ever since!

  • B.Sc – Human Kinetics
  • CrossFit Level 1 Trainer
  • Canada East Regional Competitor (2012)
  • NCCP Olympic Weightlifting – Instructor In Training
  • First Aid/CPR Certified

Favourite WOD: Diane

Least Favourite WOD: Karen, or anything with rowing

Favourite Treats:

All of them….but If I had to choose I would say fish and chips from R U Serious and about 15 dollars worth of Menchies.

I’ve always been tied up in athletics, from years of competitive soccer to amateur boxing to everything in between; I’ve always needed an outlet. After “retiring” from boxing, I was working with a personal trainer who began introducing me to different CrossFit elements. My friend + coworker then brought me to a “Wine + WOD” event at a CrossFit gym, and that was kind of it. I was hooked. I started transitioning out of working with my personal trainer, and the little bit of boxing I continued to do, and jumped into CrossFit “full time.” It was definitely how humbling CrossFit was that drew me in, and the continuous challenge of the sport/movements since. There’s nothing like it.

  • CrossFit Level 1 Trainer
  • First Aid/CPR Certified

What Carly Loves About Coaching:

I’ve always had aspirations to be a coach, whether that was in Soccer or Boxing. So, when this opportunity presented itself, I jumped at it. I’ll argue that there isn’t a more fulfilling ‘job’ than coaching; developing relationships, having people trust in you, your insight and your abilities, and watching people progress from one day to the next. It’s easy to preach the positive outcomes of CrossFit and its functionality for overall wellbeing and longevity, especially when I’ve witnessed them first hand. Seeing someone achieve something they otherwise thought they couldn’t is pretty incredible.

I also enjoy the challenge and the adaptability that CrossFit coaching demands, knowing that every. single. class. is going to bring something new to the table. And I’m inspired every day by the community at 1827; the energy, the positivity and connecting with people on a meaningful level.

Favourite WOD: I’m a big fan of gymnastics or anything with barbell cycling.

Least Favourite WOD: I will say ‘snatches’, because they are THE most humbling/complex movement to me. But, I’m also not the biggest fan of dumbbell workouts or rowing. There’s not much I don’t “enjoy” though, I like working on weaknesses.

Favourite Treats:

Sign me up for cookies – salted caramel brownie from the Breadbar – or some good ol’ fashion nachooooooos.

Growing up, I spent most of my days and free time in a dance studio. It was a huge passion of mine; I loved the discipline, the attention to detail and having an artistic outlet to express myself. I stopped dancing in first year university, and felt lost without that outlet. Sometime early in my second year of university after watching a video of Camille Leblanc-Bazinet snatching on Instagram I decided to give CrossFit a try. Even though I spent my first class trying to string together double unders and struggling through thrusters, I was absolutely hooked, and I haven’t looked back since.

  • CrossFit Level 2 Trainer
  • First Aid/CPR Certified

What Alice Loves About Coaching:

There are countless things I love about CrossFit; I love our community, I love the endless pursuit of improvement and as a coach, I love the “aha” moments that lead to first toes to bar, double unders and muscle ups.

Favourite WOD: Glen, although I do Fran on my birthday every year.

Least Favourite WOD: Fran.

Favourite Treats:

Vegan donuts & sweet potato fries. Also chips and hummus!

Curtis Rattray

Coach

[He/Him]

After years of minimal results and growing frustration with traditional training methodologies, I was introduced to CrossFit by my brother who had had almost immediate success with advancing his athletic career by switching to CrossFit. Even after an extremely humbling beginning, I knew I had found something truly transformative and the challenge I had been looking for. After over 10 years of coaching football, CrossFit presented a new avenue to help others and I was immediately motivated to pursue my Level 1. Since then my passion for it has only grown, and has taken me places I never imagined. Having coached internationally, what always impresses me is the tangible sense of community you feel every time you step foot inside a CrossFit gym.
